Detailed notes

The fine print is here.

Idaho Master Electrician: Pass the Exam — No Journeyman License Required

DOPL issues the Idaho Master Electrician certificate to applicants who pass the board-designated master examination. Idaho Code § 54-1017 makes performing master-level electrical work without valid credentials a misdemeanor. Under current IDAPA 24.39.10 (amended April 4, 2025), a journeyman license is explicitly not required: "A master electrician does not need to also hold a journeyman license."

Initial Cost: $15 Application Fee Plus $65 License Issuance Fee

The application fee is $15. DOPL charges a separate $65 license fee when the certificate first issues — a total initial outlay of $80. Apply with a passing exam result at dopl.idaho.gov/ele/ele-licensing/.

Renew Every Three Years at $45 — No Continuing Education Required

The Master Electrician certificate renews every 36 months at $45. IDAPA 24.39.10 does not require continuing education for master electrician renewal.

A Master Electrician Qualifies as a Supervising Electrician for a Contractor License

Idaho Electrical Contractors must designate a supervising electrician. Under IDAPA 24.39.10 § 200.03.a, a master electrician qualifies — and so do journeyman, residential, and limited electrical installer certificate holders. Holding the master certificate gives you the broadest scope of authority.

Misdemeanor Exposure Under Idaho Code § 54-1017

Operating without a valid Master Electrician certificate when performing master-level electrical work is a misdemeanor. Each day of violation is a separate offense under § 54-1017.
