Idaho Electrical Contractor License: Designate a Supervising Electrician and Carry Insurance

To obtain an Idaho Electrical Contractor license, you must designate a supervising electrician and carry active liability insurance before you apply — DOPL will not issue the license without both. The supervising electrician does not need to be a Master Electrician.

Designate a Supervising Electrician — Any Licensed Electrician Class Qualifies

IDAPA 24.39.10, Section 100.05 requires every Idaho Electrical Contractor to designate one supervising electrician responsible for the license's activities. That person may hold any class of Idaho electrical license: master, journeyman, residential, or limited electrical installer. The supervising electrician cannot represent more than one contractor at a time. If your supervising electrician leaves, designate a replacement immediately or your license lapses.

Carry General Liability Insurance and Workers' Compensation

Idaho Code § 54-1009 ties license suspension directly to losing liability or workers' compensation coverage. Carry general liability insurance and, if you have employees, maintain workers' compensation. A certificate of insurance is a required document at application.

Initial Cost: $15 Application Fee Plus $125 License Issuance Fee

The application fee is $15; DOPL charges a separate $125 license fee when the license first issues — a $140 total initial outlay. Apply at dopl.idaho.gov/ele/ele-licensing/ with your certificate of insurance and supervising electrician documentation.

Renew Annually at $100 — No CE Required

The license renews every 12 months at $100. Idaho does not require continuing education for electrical contractor renewal.

Operating Without a License: Misdemeanor and Civil Penalties

Operating without a valid Idaho Electrical Contractor license is a misdemeanor under Idaho Code § 54-1017. IDAPA 24.39.10, Section 300 imposes civil penalties up to $1,000 per violation; Idaho Code § 54-1017 makes each day of violation a separate offense.
