Detailed notes
The fine print is here.
Register Before Taking on Any Job That Costs $2,000 or More
Idaho exempts work under $2,000 in combined labor and materials — Idaho Code § 54-5205(2)(f) — but everything above that threshold requires a valid contractor registration from the DOPL Contractors Board. Working without registration on a qualifying project is a misdemeanor under § 54-5217.
A Valid Registration Authorizes Statewide Residential and Commercial Work
Registered contractors may perform residential and commercial construction, remodeling, additions, and general contracting work throughout Idaho. The registration does not cap project size or trade scope.
Carry $300,000 in General Liability Insurance Before You Apply — No Bond Required
DOPL requires proof of a general liability policy covering not less than $300,000 single limit, including products and completed operations coverage. If you have employees, a workers' compensation certificate is also required; with no employees, a written exemption suffices. No surety bond is required for registration.
$50 Application Fee — Biennial Renewal at $50, Late Reinstatement $35
The application fee is $50. Registration renews every 24 months (biennial as of October 2025) at $50. No continuing education is required. If you miss the renewal date, the reinstatement fee is $35 under IDAPA 24.21.01, Section 400.
Unregistered Contractors Lose the Right to Enforce Contracts and File Liens
Idaho Code § 54-5208 denies mechanics' lien rights to unregistered contractors. Idaho Code § 54-5217(2) bars unregistered contractors from pursuing payment claims in court. Both consequences apply automatically — even on a single unregistered project. Apply or renew at dopl.idaho.gov/con/.
