Idaho General Contractor Registration
The Idaho Division of Occupational and Professional Licenses (DOPL) Contractors Board requires contractors performing construction work costing $2,000 or more in labor and materials to register. Idaho uses a registration system rather than a traditional licensing system for general contractors.
What This Registration Authorizes
Registered contractors may perform residential and commercial construction, remodeling, additions, and general contracting work in Idaho. Registration is required for any project where combined labor and materials cost $2,000 or more.
Insurance Requirements
- General Liability Insurance: Minimum $300,000 single-limit policy with products and completed operations coverage
- Workers' Compensation: Required if you have employees, or a statement of exemption
- No surety bond is required for general contractor registration
Registration Process
- Application Fee: $50
- Complete the registration application and submit proof of insurance
- Applications should be filed at least 30 days before beginning work
Renewal Process
- Renewal Period: Every 2 years (biennial as of October 2025)
- Renewal Fee: $50 (biennial)
- Late Reinstatement Penalty: $35
- No Continuing Education Required
- File renewal at least 30 days before expiration
Consequences of Operating Without Registration
Performing construction work of $2,000 or more without valid registration is a misdemeanor in Idaho. Unregistered contractors cannot enforce contracts or file mechanics' liens for payment. The Contractors Board actively investigates complaints.
