Detailed notes

The fine print is here.

Pass the Idaho HVAC Exam Before You Apply

DOPL issues the HVAC Journeyman certificate to technicians who pass the state exam through PSI — the exam result must be in hand before submitting your application. Working without a valid journeyman certificate is a misdemeanor under Idaho Code § 54-5022, with civil penalties up to $1,000 per offense.

Journeyman Status Covers Installation Work, Not Contracting

A licensed HVAC Journeyman may install, alter, and repair HVAC systems while employed by or under supervision of a licensed HVAC Contractor. Operating an HVAC contracting business requires a separate contractor license — the journeyman certificate does not authorize contracting on its own.

Application: $35 Fee Plus $150 at Initial Issuance

Submit your PSI exam results and application at dopl.idaho.gov/hvac/. The application fee is $35; DOPL charges a separate $150 license issuance fee when the certificate is first granted.

Renewal at $75 — Miss the Deadline and It Costs $110

The HVAC Journeyman certificate renews at $75. If you miss the renewal deadline, Idaho Code § 54-5013 requires a $35 revival fee on top of the $75 renewal — total $110. After the revival window closes, a lapsed certificate requires a full new application, not just payment of fees.

Unlicensed HVAC Work Is a Misdemeanor

Performing HVAC installation, alteration, or repair without a valid certificate is a misdemeanor under Idaho Code § 54-5022. Civil penalties can reach $1,000 per offense in addition to work stoppage.
