Pass the HVAC Contractor Exam and Post a $2,000 Bond Before the License Issues
Idaho's DOPL HVAC Board requires every new HVAC contractor applicant to pass the board-designated contractor examination and post a $2,000 compliance surety bond before the license can issue. The bond, confirmed in Idaho Code § 54-5007, must remain active through the entire license period.
The HVAC Contractor License Covers Installation, Alteration, and Repair Statewide
A licensed Idaho HVAC Contractor may install, alter, and repair heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems on residential, commercial, and industrial properties throughout the state.
Application Fee Is $35 — Bond and Exam Pass Both Required Upfront
The application fee is $35. DOPL will not issue the contractor license without a passing exam result on file and an active $2,000 compliance bond. Apply at dopl.idaho.gov/hvac/.
Renewal Every Three Years at $150 — A Lapsed Bond Puts the License at Risk
The HVAC Contractor license renews every three years at $150. No continuing education is required at renewal. The $2,000 compliance bond must stay current for the full three-year period. If the license expires, the DOPL reinstatement fee is $225 per the current fee schedule.
Operating Without a License Is a Misdemeanor Under Idaho Code § 54-5022
Performing HVAC contracting work without a valid Idaho HVAC Contractor license is a misdemeanor under § 54-5022. Violations can result in fines and work stoppage orders.
