The fine print is here.
Idaho Fire Sprinkler Contractor License: Bond, Insurance, and Exam or NICET III Required
Getting a fire sprinkler contractor license in Idaho requires choosing one of two qualification paths — a state exam with documented project experience, or NICET Level III certification — plus carrying a $2,000 bond and active liability insurance before the license can issue.
Two Paths to Qualify: State Exam, or NICET Level III
Path A — Exam plus experience: Pass the fire sprinkler contractor examination administered by the State Fire Marshal, and provide documentation of having supervised or installed at least four systems with 200 or more sprinkler heads each.
Path B — NICET certification: Provide proof of NICET Level III Certification in Water-Based Systems. No state exam is required on this path.
$2,000 Bond and $250,000 Liability Insurance Required at Application
IDAPA 18.08.02, §015 requires two financial instruments in place before the license issues:
- Surety bond: $2,000, naming the Idaho State Fire Marshal as obligee
- General liability insurance: minimum $250,000 aggregate, with the State Fire Marshal's Office listed as certificate holder on your COI
A lapsed bond or expired COI puts the license at risk.
Application Fee: $400 — Annual Renewal: $100
The new-application fee is $400. Once issued, the license renews every 12 months at $100. No continuing education is required. The DOI application form states a processing range of two weeks to 120 days for complete submissions.
Operating Without a License Is Prohibited
IDAPA 18.08.02, §012 prohibits anyone from acting or advertising as a fire protection sprinkler contractor without a valid Idaho license. Apply or renew at doi.idaho.gov/state-fire-marshal/.
