Alaska General Contractor Registration
The Alaska Division of Corporations, Business and Professional Licensing (DCBPL) issues the General Contractor registration, which authorizes holders to perform construction operations requiring three or more trades or to supervise mechanical and specialty subcontractors on commercial and residential projects.
What This Registration Authorizes
General Contractors may perform new construction, commercial work, and residential remodeling. Contractors performing new home construction or residential work exceeding 25% of the structure's value must additionally obtain a Residential Contractor Endorsement.
Bond and Insurance Requirements
- Surety Bond: $25,000 bond required, filed with the DCBPL
- General Liability Insurance: Minimum limits of $20,000 property damage, $50,000 injury/death per person, $100,000 injury/death per occurrence
- Workers' Compensation: Required if you have employees
Application Process
- Application Fee: $100 (nonrefundable)
- Registration Fee: $250 (biennial)
- No examination is required for the General Contractor registration (without residential endorsement)
Renewal Process
- Renewal Period: Every 2 years (expires September 30 of even-numbered years)
- Renewal Fee: $250
- No Continuing Education Required: Maintain current bond and insurance throughout the registration term.
Consequences of Operating Without Registration
Under AS 08.18.125, operating without valid registration carries an administrative penalty of $1,000 for a first offense and $1,500 for subsequent offenses. Each day of unlicensed work is a separate violation. Contractors may also face stop-work orders and loss of public works bid eligibility.
