Detailed notes
The fine print is here.
Alaska Electrical Contractor Registration
Alaska electrical contractors register with the Alaska Division of Corporations, Business and Professional Licensing (DCBPL) as Specialty Contractors under AS 08.18. The registration authorizes businesses to perform electrical work covered by the National Electrical Code (NEC) or National Electrical Safety Code (NESC).
Electrical Administrator Requirement
The business must maintain an assigned Electrical Administrator (EA) at all times. The EA holds a supervisory license — either Residential Wiring (up to four-unit residential structures, three stories) or Unlimited Commercial Wiring (all electrical work) — that determines the scope of electrical projects your business may take on. Without a valid EA assignment, the registration cannot be issued or renewed.
Bond and Insurance Requirements
Confirmed minimums under AS 08.18.071 and AS 08.18.101:
- Surety bond: $10,000 (filed with DCBPL)
- General liability: at least $20,000 property damage; $50,000 injury or death per person; $100,000 for injury or death to more than one person
- Workers' compensation: required under AS 23.30 if you have employees
Renewal and Expiration
As of October 1, 2023, all DCBPL contractor registrations expire September 30 of even-numbered years. The biennial renewal fee is $250. Register or renew at the DCBPL contractor licensing page. No continuing education is required for the registration itself — the Electrical Administrator license carries its own renewal requirements.
Penalty for Unlicensed Work
Operating without a valid registration violates AS 08.18.125. Each day of unlicensed work constitutes a separate violation.
