Detailed notes

The fine print is here.

Alaska Electrical Contractor Registration

The Alaska DCBPL issues Electrical Contractor registrations to businesses performing electrical work covered by the National Electrical Code (NEC) or National Electrical Safety Code (NESC). Electrical contractors are classified as specialty contractors and must either hold an Electrical Administrator license or employ someone who does.

What This Registration Authorizes

Electrical Contractors may perform maintenance, repair, installation, construction, and operation of electrical systems. The scope of work depends on the Electrical Administrator license category: Residential Wiring (limited to residential properties up to four-plex, three stories) or Unlimited Commercial Wiring (all electrical work).

Electrical Administrator Requirement

The business must have an assigned Electrical Administrator who holds either a Residential Wiring or Unlimited Commercial Wiring license. The administrator is a supervisory license that ensures code compliance but does not itself authorize the holder to perform hands-on electrical work.

Bond and Insurance Requirements

  • Surety Bond: $10,000 bond required, filed with the DCBPL
  • General Liability Insurance: Minimum limits of $20,000 property damage, $50,000 injury/death per person, $100,000 injury/death per occurrence
  • Workers' Compensation: Required if you have employees

Application Process

  • Application Fee: $100 (nonrefundable)
  • Registration Fee: $250 (biennial)

Renewal Process

  • Renewal Period: Every 2 years (expires September 30 of even-numbered years)
  • Renewal Fee: $250
  • No Continuing Education Required for the contractor registration itself (the Electrical Administrator license has separate CE requirements).

Consequences of Operating Without Registration

Under AS 08.18.125, operating without valid registration carries an administrative penalty of $1,000 for a first offense and $1,500 for subsequent offenses. Each day of unlicensed work is a separate violation.
