Alaska Specialty Contractor Registration
The Alaska DCBPL issues the Specialty Contractor registration for contractors who perform work in specific construction trades such as carpentry, painting, roofing, excavation, concrete, drywall, insulation, demolition, or flooring. Specialty contractors are limited to no more than three trade specialties.
What This Registration Authorizes
Specialty Contractors may perform work in their registered trade specialties as defined in 12 AAC 21.200 through 21.570. Recognized trades include finish carpentry, rough carpentry, concrete and paving, drywall, excavation, painting, roofing, flooring, insulation, demolition, drilling, and many others. Work exceeding three trades requires a General Contractor registration.
Bond and Insurance Requirements
- Surety Bond: $10,000 bond required, filed with the DCBPL
- General Liability Insurance: Minimum limits of $20,000 property damage, $50,000 injury/death per person, $100,000 injury/death per occurrence
- Workers' Compensation: Required if you have employees
Application Process
- Application Fee: $100 (nonrefundable)
- Registration Fee: $250 (biennial)
- No examination is required for specialty contractor registration
Renewal Process
- Renewal Period: Every 2 years (expires September 30 of even-numbered years)
- Renewal Fee: $250
- No Continuing Education Required: Maintain current bond and insurance throughout the registration term.
Consequences of Operating Without Registration
Under AS 08.18.125, operating without valid registration carries an administrative penalty of $1,000 for a first offense and $1,500 for subsequent offenses. Each day of unlicensed work is a separate violation.
