Alaska Mechanical Contractor Registration

The Alaska DCBPL issues the Mechanical Contractor registration for businesses performing plumbing, HVAC, sheet metal, sprinkler systems, fire protection, and refrigeration work. Mechanical contractors must either hold a Mechanical Administrator license or employ someone who does.

What This Registration Authorizes

Mechanical Contractors may perform work in mechanical disciplines including plumbing, heating, HVAC, sheet metal, sprinkler and fire protection systems, and refrigeration. The scope of authorized work depends on the categories held by the assigned Mechanical Administrator.

Mechanical Administrator Requirement

The business owner must either hold a Mechanical Administrator license or employ a licensed Mechanical Administrator. Available administrator categories include Residential HVAC (RHVC), Residential Plumbing and Hydronic Heating (RPHH), Unlimited Commercial and Industrial Plumbing (UCIP), Unlimited HVAC/Sheet Metal (UHVCS), Unlimited Refrigeration (UR), and Mechanical Systems Temperature Control (CNTL).

Bond and Insurance Requirements

  • Surety Bond: $10,000 bond required, filed with the DCBPL
  • General Liability Insurance: Minimum limits of $20,000 property damage, $50,000 injury/death per person, $100,000 injury/death per occurrence
  • Workers' Compensation: Required if you have employees

Application Process

  • Application Fee: $100 (nonrefundable)
  • Registration Fee: $250 (biennial)

Renewal Process

  • Renewal Period: Every 2 years (expires September 30 of even-numbered years)
  • Renewal Fee: $250
  • No Continuing Education Required for the contractor registration itself (the Mechanical Administrator license has separate CE requirements).

Consequences of Operating Without Registration

Under AS 08.18.125, operating without valid registration carries an administrative penalty of $1,000 for a first offense and $1,500 for subsequent offenses. Each day of unlicensed work is a separate violation.
