Alabama Home Builder License
The Alabama Home Builders Licensure Board (HBLB) licenses residential builders statewide. A license is required for any person or company constructing, improving, or repairing residential structures valued at $10,000 or more.
Requirements
- Experience: Demonstrated residential construction experience
- Examination: Must pass the HBLB home builder exam
- Insurance: General liability and workers' compensation required
- Application Fee: $100
Continuing Education
- Hours: 6 hours per renewal cycle
- Topics: Alabama residential building code, energy code, safety, and business practices
- Providers: Approved by the HBLB

Important Note
Contracts entered into by unlicensed home builders are unenforceable under Alabama law. This means an unlicensed builder cannot sue to collect payment for work performed.
