Alabama Asbestos Abatement Contractor License

If your company is taking asbestos removal work in Alabama, the first gate is ADEM contractor certification through AEPACS. This is not just a fee payment. ADEM expects the business to have current supervisor accreditation and insurance lined up before abatement work starts.

What goes into the contractor filing

ADEM's current Form 497 instructions tie the application to AEPACS and a $740 application fee. The contractor also has to submit at least one current Alabama asbestos supervisor accreditation certificate. ADEM's filing materials also call for the company to keep its supervisor, worker, and prior-operations information with the certification record.

What has to stay current

This filing can go sideways after approval if the staffing and insurance records drift. The company needs properly accredited supervisors and workers on asbestos jobs, and it needs to keep public-liability and workers' compensation coverage in force. If the accredited supervisor on file changes, treat that as an update item before the next project starts.

Renewal and job notice

ADEM handles the certification on a one-year cycle, and the public workflow now runs through AEPACS instead of a static paper renewal process. Separate from the company certification, ADEM also requires Form 496 for each regulated abatement or demolition project, and that notice is due at least 10 working days before work begins.

Practical takeaway

Contractors get in trouble when they treat the company certificate as the whole job. In Alabama, the company certification, the current supervisor accreditation, and the project-specific notice all have to line up. If one piece is missing, the work can stop and the company is exposed to asbestos enforcement.
