The fine print is here.
Wisconsin HVAC Contractor Registration
The Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS) issues an HVAC contractor registration (not a license) for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning work. This is a 4-year business registration, not a biennial license, and no continuing education is required for the registration itself.
Requirements
- Examination: Must pass the state HVAC contractor exam
- Experience: Documented HVAC trade experience
- Insurance: General liability and workers' compensation insurance
- EPA Certification: Section 608 certification recommended for refrigerant handling
- Application Fee: $175 ($15 application + $160 credential fee per DSPS fee schedule)
Renewal Information
- Renewal Period: Every 4 years
- Renewal Fee: $160
- Continuing Education: Not required for the business registration
- Late Penalty: $25 flat DSPS late processing fee within grace period
Scope of Work
Registered HVAC contractors can install, maintain, and repair heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems throughout Wisconsin.
Climate Considerations
Wisconsin's harsh winters create strong demand for heating system installation and maintenance. Proper system sizing and efficiency are critical for energy management in the state's cold climate.
