Wisconsin Dwelling Contractor Qualifier Certification
The Dwelling Contractor Qualifier certification is an individual credential issued by DSPS. Each dwelling contractor business must have at least one certified qualifier on staff. This individual credential carries the CE obligation.
Requirements
- Examination: Must pass the DSPS dwelling contractor qualifier exam
- Experience: Documented residential construction experience
- Application Fee: $45 ($15 application + $30 credential fee)
Renewal Information
- Renewal Period: Every 2 years
- Renewal Fee: $30
- Continuing Education: 12 hours per renewal cycle covering building codes, safety, and business practices
- Late Penalty: $25 flat DSPS late processing fee within grace period
Role of the Qualifier
The qualifier serves as the knowledge expert for the dwelling contractor business. They are responsible for ensuring work meets Wisconsin Uniform Dwelling Code (UDC) requirements and for overseeing construction quality. CE requirements attach to this individual credential, not the business registration.
Individual vs. Business Credential
- Qualifier Certification: Individual credential proving competency (this entry, biennial $30 renewal)
- Dwelling Contractor Registration: Business registration for the contracting company (annual $25 renewal)
- Both are required to legally operate a dwelling contractor business in Wisconsin
