Scope: Single-Family Dwelling Electrical Work Only

The West Virginia Office of the State Fire Marshal issues the Single Family Dwelling Specialty Electrician license under WV Code Chapter 29-3B and WV CSR 103-05. This license authorizes electrical installation, maintenance, and repair in single-family residential structures only. Work on commercial buildings, multi-family structures, or industrial facilities requires a different license class.

One Year of Experience and a 50-Question NEC Exam

Applicants must have at least one year of experience in the single-family dwelling specialty — educational programs may satisfy the requirement in full (WV CSR 103-05 §103-5-4.3). After meeting the experience threshold, pass a 50-question exam drawn from the 2023 NFPA 70 National Electrical Code, residential scope.

  • Application review fee: $25, non-refundable, paid to be authorized for testing (§103-5-5.2.2)
  • License fee: $50, paid upon passing the exam

Apply at the State Fire Marshal's portal: sfm-permit-public.wvoasis.gov

Annual Renewal — Licenses Expire June 30

Licenses expire June 30 each year (§103-5-7.1). Renew through the WVOasis portal before that date:

  • Renewal fee: $50 per year (multi-year renewals up to 3 years available at $50/year)
  • Late renewal cost: $100 total — $50 renewal fee plus $50 late penalty (§103-5-7.3)
  • No continuing education required

Unlicensed Work Is a Criminal Offense

Performing single-family dwelling electrical work without a valid license violates WV Code §29-3B-8 and WV CSR 103-05 §103-5-10. First-offense violations are a misdemeanor with fines of $100–$500. Second and subsequent offenses carry fines of $500–$1,000. Each unlicensed act is a separate violation.
