Master Electricians Can Supervise and Pull Permits Statewide
West Virginia's Master Electrician license, issued by the State Fire Marshal under WV Code Chapter 29-3B, authorizes the full scope of electrical work: design, installation, supervision, and permit-pulling throughout the state. WV Code §29-3B-9 preempts local licensing requirements — a valid State Fire Marshal license is all you need to work anywhere in West Virginia.
Qualifying: Two Years of Full-Scope Experience and a Written Exam
Applicants must document at least two years of electrical work experience, including experience in all phases of electrical wiring and installation (§29-3B-2). After meeting the experience threshold, pass the written exam — 50 multiple-choice questions based on the 2023 Edition of NFPA 70 (National Electrical Code), effective for all exams as of January 1, 2026. Apply through the State Fire Marshal's portal at sfm-permit-public.wvoasis.gov.
Fees and Annual Renewal
The initial application fee and annual renewal each cost $50 (as of the March 2026 fee schedule; verify current amounts at the SFM portal). A $50 late penalty applies if renewal is not submitted before the June 30 expiration. If your license lapses, WV Code §29-3B-6 allows relicensing without retesting within five years — but at double the current renewal fee. Apply and renew at sfm-permit-public.wvoasis.gov.
Supervisory Authority
Master Electricians may instruct and supervise journeyman electricians and related workers under §29-3B-2. This is the key distinction from the Journeyman license: the Master class may independently plan electrical work, design systems, and take full code-compliance responsibility.
Operating Without a License Violates WV Code §29-3B
Performing electrical work in West Virginia without a valid State Fire Marshal license violates WV Code §29-3B and may result in fines and criminal prosecution. Unlicensed electrical work also creates civil liability exposure and may void insurance coverage.
