West Virginia Master Electrician License
The West Virginia Office of the State Fire Marshal issues the Master Electrician license under WV Code 29-3B. This license authorizes the holder to perform, plan, and supervise electrical installations and to pull electrical permits throughout the state.
What This License Authorizes
Master Electricians may perform all types of electrical work, design electrical systems, supervise journeyman and apprentice electricians, and pull electrical permits. They may operate an electrical contracting business and take responsibility for all electrical work performed under their license.
Experience and Examination Requirements
- Experience: Minimum 2 years (4,000 hours) of actual hands-on electrical work experience. Vocational training cannot substitute for work experience.
- Examination: Open-book exam based on the 2023 Edition of the NFPA 70 National Electrical Code. The exam contains 50 multiple-choice questions valued at 2 points each.

Consequences of Operating Without a License
Performing electrical work without a valid State Fire Marshal license violates WV Code 29-3B and may result in fines, criminal prosecution, and civil liability. Unlicensed electrical work may also void insurance coverage.
