West Virginia Journeyman Electrician License
The West Virginia Office of the State Fire Marshal issues the Journeyman Electrician license, authorizing the holder to perform electrical installations under the supervision of a Master Electrician or independently on certain projects.
What This License Authorizes
Journeyman Electricians may perform electrical installations, maintenance, and repair work. They work under the general supervision of a Master Electrician for permit purposes but are qualified to perform electrical work independently.
Experience and Examination Requirements
Applicants must meet one of the following:
- 1 year (2,000 hours) of actual hands-on electrical work experience, OR
- Completion of an approved US Department of Labor formal Apprenticeship program, OR
- Completion of an approved West Virginia Department of Education 1,080-hour vocational course
All applicants must pass an open-book exam based on the 2023 NFPA 70 National Electrical Code (50 multiple-choice questions, 2 points each).
