West Virginia HVAC Residential Technician License


The West Virginia Division of Labor issues the HVAC Residential Technician certification, a limited-scope credential for technicians who work exclusively on residential heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems.


What This License Authorizes


HVAC Residential Technicians may install, maintain, repair, and service HVAC systems in residential structures only. This certification does not authorize commercial HVAC work.


Experience and Examination Requirements


  • Experience: 2,000 hours of experience and/or training on HVAC systems required
  • Examination: Residential-focused HVAC exam administered by ProV International.

Fees


  • Exam Fee: $59.95
  • Initial Certification Fee: $50
  • Annual Renewal Fee: $50
  • Late Fee: $25 (if renewed more than 15 days after expiration)

Renewal Process


  • Renewal Period: Annually
  • Renewal Fee: $50
  • Late Fee: $25 if renewed more than 15 days past expiration
  • No Continuing Education Required
  • Renewal notices provided approximately 45 days before expiration.

Consequences of Operating Without a License


Performing HVAC work without proper Division of Labor certification violates WV Code 21-16. Penalties may include fines and the inability to legally perform HVAC services.
