Detailed notes
The fine print is here.
Virginia Gas Fitter License (Tradesman)
Gas fitters in Virginia must hold a Tradesman license from DPOR's Board for Contractors before installing, repairing, or connecting any fuel gas system. The license covers natural gas piping, gas-fired appliances, liquefied petroleum gas systems, and related venting.
Application and Fees
The application fee is $150 per 18VAC50-30-90. Tradesman licenses renew every three years at $160 per 18VAC50-30-120. No bond or insurance is required for licensure itself.
Continuing Education
Each three-year renewal cycle requires 1 hour of continuing education covering the International Fuel Gas Code (IFGC), per 18VAC50-30-220. This is the only CE subject required for the gas fitter credential.
What Happens When the License Expires
DPOR provides a 30-day window after expiration to renew at the $160 standard rate. After that, the license must be reinstated at a higher fee per 18VAC50-30-130. There is no separate flat late penalty; reinstatement replaces renewal once the grace window closes.
Risk of Unlicensed Gas Work
Performing gas fitting work without a valid DPOR tradesman license is a Class 1 misdemeanor under § 54.1-1135. Gas system failures carry additional life-safety consequences beyond licensing penalties.
