Get the filing straight.

    File through Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR) and pay the $250.00 renewal fee once the supporting proof is ready.

    Leave room for processing

    Typical processing time is 30 days, so do not wait until the last minute.

If you miss the deadline, the late penalty is $50.00, with a 30-day grace period.

Virginia Contractor License (Class C)


The Class C Contractor license is the entry-level tier in Virginia, covering smaller construction projects under $30,000.


When Class C is Required


  • Projects under $30,000 that require a building permit
  • Certain specialty trades up to $150,000 (electrical, plumbing, HVAC)

Requirements


  • Experience: Minimum 1 year of experience
  • Pre-License Education: 8 hours of Board-approved pre-license education (by a member of responsible management)
  • No Examination Required: Class C does not require a Board exam
  • Insurance: General liability insurance is not mandated by DPOR for licensure, but is commonly carried and recommended for business protection
  • Application Fee: $260 ($235 base + $25 Recovery Fund)

  • Renewal Period: Every 2 years
  • Renewal Fee: $250 ($220 base + $30 Recovery Fund)
  • Late Fee: $50 for late renewal

Scope of Work


Class C contractors can perform work on projects valued under $30,000. Some specialty trades (electrical, plumbing, HVAC) have an elevated threshold of $150,000 for Class C.

Class C is the only Virginia contractor license that does not require passing an examination, making it the most accessible entry point for new contractors.
