Virginia Contractor License (Class B)
The Class B Contractor license covers mid-range construction projects in Virginia. It is administered by the DPOR Board for Contractors.
When Class B is Required
- Single contract or project value of $30,000 or more but less than $150,000
Requirements
- Experience: Minimum 3 years of experience for the Qualified Individual
- Pre-License Education: 8 hours of Board-approved pre-license education
- Examinations: Must pass General exam and Virginia exam
- Financial: $15,000 minimum net worth/equity documented
- Insurance: General liability and workers' compensation are not mandated by DPOR for licensure, but are commonly carried and often required by project owners and general contractors
- Application Fee: $405 ($380 base + $25 Recovery Fund)
Renewal Information
- Renewal Period: Every 2 years
- Renewal Fee: $290 ($260 base + $30 Recovery Fund)
- Late Fee: $50 for late renewal
Scope of Work
Class B contractors can take on projects valued between $30,000 and $149,999. For multiple specialty classifications, each must be listed on the license application.
Upgrade Path
Class B contractors can upgrade to Class A by meeting the higher experience, financial, and examination requirements.
