Virginia Fire Protection Contractor (DPOR Specialty)
Virginia requires fire protection contractors to hold a specialty classification from the Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR). This covers fire sprinkler, fire alarm, and suppression system work.
Fire protection is a specialty classification under the standard contractor licensing system (Class A, B, or C). Fees shown are for the Class C minimum; higher classes have higher fees.
Requirements
- License Class: Must hold Class A, B, or C contractor license with fire protection specialty
- Examination: Must pass DPOR trade exam (Class A/B require additional exams)
- Experience: Documented experience in fire protection systems
- Insurance: General liability insurance is not mandated by DPOR for licensure, but is commonly carried and recommended for business protection
- Application Fee: $260 (Class C: $235 + $25 Recovery Fund)
Renewal
- Period: Every 2 years
- Fee: $250 (Class C: $220 + $30 Recovery Fund)
- Late Fee: $50 (reinstatement required if 30+ days late)
