South Carolina Mechanical Contractor License
Any company installing, altering, or repairing mechanical systems on South Carolina projects valued at more than $10,000 must hold a CLB mechanical contractor license from the SC Contractors Licensing Board (LLR). The license covers piping, sheet metal, pressure and process piping, and other mechanical systems — distinct from the electrical (EL), plumbing (PL), and air conditioning (AC) subclassifications the CLB also issues.
Four years of experience, an exam, and financial qualification required
Applicants need four years of documented mechanical contracting experience, the CLB mechanical contractor examination (business/law and trade components), and either a CPA-prepared financial statement for your license group or a surety bond in the CLB-set amount. The initial application fee is $350.
Processing takes up to 45 days.
Costs and renewal
Mechanical contractor licenses expire October 31 of odd-numbered years. The biennial renewal fee is $135 on time. The late penalty starts at $100 for November renewal, $150 for December, and $200 for January. After January 31, reinstatement is required. No continuing education is required for renewal.
Operating without a license
Performing mechanical contracting on projects over $10,000 without a valid CLB license is a misdemeanor under SC Code § 40-11-200. Conviction carries up to $5,000 in fines and up to one year in prison. The LLR may also seek injunctive relief to halt unlicensed work. Apply and renew at llr.sc.gov/clb.
