South Carolina Electrical Contractor License


The SC Contractors Licensing Board issues electrical contractor licenses as a subclassification of the mechanical contractor license (SC Code 40-11-410). Companies performing electrical installations on projects valued at $5,000 or more must hold this license.


Requirements


  • Experience: Minimum 4 years of electrical contracting experience
  • Examination: Must pass the electrical contractor exam
  • Financial Statement: CPA-prepared financial statement
  • Insurance: General liability insurance is not mandated by the CLB for licensure, though it is commonly carried by contractors. Workers' compensation requirements are governed separately by SC state law for employers.
  • Application Fee: $300

Note on License Structure


The CLB issues one "Mechanical Contractor" license with subclassifications for electrical, plumbing, and HVAC work. All subclassifications share the same fee schedule as the mechanical contractor license.
