Detailed notes
The fine print is here.
South Carolina Asbestos Abatement Contractor License
Any company removing, encapsulating, or disturbing asbestos-containing materials in South Carolina must hold a contractor license issued by the SC Department of Environmental Services (SCDES), Bureau of Air Quality. Working without this license can result in civil penalties of up to $10,000 per violation under SC Code § 44-87-50.
Who needs this license
SCDES requires a contractor license for regulated asbestos activity — demolition or renovation involving asbestos-containing materials above threshold quantities, encapsulation, and glove-bag operations. Individual project supervisors and workers require separate SCDES supervisor and worker accreditations in addition to the company contractor license.
Application requirements
- Training: AHERA-accredited initial training required for supervisors and workers
- Application fee: $100
- Processing time: Approximately 30 days
Renewal
Asbestos contractor licenses renew annually. The renewal fee is $100. A late renewal within the 30-day window carries a $100 penalty. Maintaining a valid affiliated SCDES-accredited supervisor requires completing an annual 8-hour AHERA refresher training course before each license year.
Operating without a license
Performing asbestos abatement in South Carolina without a valid SCDES contractor license violates SC Code Title 44, Chapter 87 and applicable federal NESHAP rules. Civil penalties can reach $10,000 per violation. Apply and manage your license at des.sc.gov/programs/bureau-air-quality/asbestos.
