NYC Special Electrician License
The Special Electrician license is a limited-scope electrical license issued by the NYC Department of Buildings. Unlike the Master Electrician license, it restricts the holder to performing electrical work only on a specific property or for a specific employer.
Requirements
- Sponsorship: Must be sponsored by a building owner or management company
- Experience: Practical experience in the electrical trade
- Examination: Must pass the Special Electrician exam
- Insurance: Employer must carry liability and workers' compensation insurance

Scope of Work
Special Electricians are limited to:
- Electrical maintenance and minor installations at a specific property
- Work authorized by the sponsoring employer only
- Cannot pull permits independently
- Cannot operate an electrical contracting business
Key Differences from Master Electrician
The Special Electrician license is property-specific and employer-dependent, whereas the Master Electrician license allows independent contracting citywide. Special Electricians cannot supervise others or operate their own business.
