NYC General Contractor Registration
New York does not have a single statewide general contractor license. Instead, contractor licensing is handled at the city and county level. In New York City, general contractors must register with the Department of Buildings (DOB).
Requirements
- Insurance: General liability insurance with minimum $1,000,000 per occurrence, plus workers' compensation and disability insurance
- Financial Proof: Bank statements showing a minimum $25,000 ending balance
- Application: Notarized application submitted through the DOB NOW portal
- Photo ID: Government-issued identification required
Registration Process
1. Create a DOB NOW account
2. Submit application with required documents in PDF format
3. Pay the $300 registration fee
4. Schedule an in-person appointment for photo and license card upon approval
5. Processing takes approximately 15 business days

Scope
