NYC Master Plumber License
The Master Plumber license is issued by the NYC Department of Buildings. A licensed Master Plumber is required for all plumbing work in New York City, from residential repairs to large commercial installations.
Requirements
- Experience: Minimum 7 years of combined practical experience, including apprenticeship and journeyman work
- Examination: Must pass the NYC Master Plumber licensing exam
- Insurance: General liability and workers' compensation insurance required
- Physical Exam: LIC62 Physical Examination Form required
Renewal Information
- Renewal Period: Every 3 years
- Renewal Fee: $225
- Continuing Education: 7 hours of approved coursework per renewal cycle
- Late Fee: $50 if 1-30 days late; $100 if 31+ days late (up to 1 year)
- Physical Exam: Must be completed within 90 days prior to renewal
- Application Fee: $200
Scope of Work
Master Plumbers can:
- Design and install plumbing systems
- Pull plumbing permits
- Supervise all plumbing work
- Operate a plumbing contracting business in NYC
- Work on gas piping systems
Important Notes
New York State does not issue a statewide plumbing license. Licensing is at the municipal level. The NYC exam is considered one of the most difficult plumbing exams in the country.
