Before you renew

Get the filing straight.

    Finish the CE first

    Complete the 7 required hours before you start the renewal.

    Check the insurance certificates

    Make sure the required policies are current and match what the board or agency expects before you file.

    File with the board

    File through New York City Department of Buildings (DOB) and pay the $225.00 renewal fee once the supporting proof is ready.

    Leave room for processing

    Typical processing time is 60 days, so do not wait until the last minute.

If you miss the deadline, the late penalty is $100.00, with a 30-day grace period.

NYC Master Plumber License


The Master Plumber license is issued by the NYC Department of Buildings. A licensed Master Plumber is required for all plumbing work in New York City, from residential repairs to large commercial installations.


Requirements


  • Experience: Minimum 7 years of combined practical experience, including apprenticeship and journeyman work
  • Examination: Must pass the NYC Master Plumber licensing exam
  • Insurance: General liability and workers' compensation insurance required
  • Physical Exam: LIC62 Physical Examination Form required

Renewal Information


  • Renewal Period: Every 3 years
  • Renewal Fee: $225
  • Continuing Education: 7 hours of approved coursework per renewal cycle
  • Late Fee: $50 if 1-30 days late; $100 if 31+ days late (up to 1 year)
  • Physical Exam: Must be completed within 90 days prior to renewal

  • Application Fee: $200

Master Plumbers can:

  • Design and install plumbing systems
  • Pull plumbing permits
  • Supervise all plumbing work
  • Operate a plumbing contracting business in NYC
  • Work on gas piping systems

Important Notes


New York State does not issue a statewide plumbing license. Licensing is at the municipal level. The NYC exam is considered one of the most difficult plumbing exams in the country.
