Before you renew

Get the filing straight.

NYS Department of Labor Contractor Registry


Effective December 2024, New York State requires all construction contractors to register with the Department of Labor. This is a new statewide requirement that applies in addition to any local licensing requirements.


Who Must Register


  • All persons or entities performing construction work for compensation in New York State
  • Both general contractors and subcontractors
  • Applies statewide, not just NYC

Requirements


  • Insurance: Workers' compensation and general liability insurance required
  • Registration: Online registration through the NYSDOL portal
  • Fee: No registration fee

Renewal Information


  • Renewal Period: Every 2 years
  • Renewal Fee: Free
  • Update Obligation: Must update registration within 30 days of any material changes

  • Renewal Fee: $0
  • Application Fee: $0

Penalties for Non-Compliance


  • First offense: Civil penalty up to $1,000
  • Subsequent offenses: Up to $5,000
  • Stop-work orders may be issued
  • Awarding agencies may verify registration status

Important Notes


This is a new law effective December 2024. Enforcement is expected to ramp up throughout 2025-2026. Registration is separate from and in addition to NYC DOB registration or any county-level requirements.




Registration Fee: $200 ($100 for MWBE-certified businesses).
