NYS Department of Labor Contractor Registry
Effective December 2024, New York State requires all construction contractors to register with the Department of Labor. This is a new statewide requirement that applies in addition to any local licensing requirements.
Who Must Register
- All persons or entities performing construction work for compensation in New York State
- Both general contractors and subcontractors
- Applies statewide, not just NYC
Requirements
- Insurance: Workers' compensation and general liability insurance required
- Registration: Online registration through the NYSDOL portal
- Fee: No registration fee
Renewal Information
- Renewal Period: Every 2 years
- Renewal Fee: Free
- Update Obligation: Must update registration within 30 days of any material changes
- Renewal Fee: $0
- Application Fee: $0
Penalties for Non-Compliance
- First offense: Civil penalty up to $1,000
- Subsequent offenses: Up to $5,000
- Stop-work orders may be issued
- Awarding agencies may verify registration status
Important Notes
This is a new law effective December 2024. Enforcement is expected to ramp up throughout 2025-2026. Registration is separate from and in addition to NYC DOB registration or any county-level requirements.
Registration Fee: $200 ($100 for MWBE-certified businesses).
