Montana Residential Electrician License
The Montana State Electrical Board issues the Residential Electrician license, authorizing holders to perform electrical work on residential structures including single-family homes, duplexes, and residential buildings.
What This License Authorizes
Residential Electricians may install, alter, and repair electrical wiring, apparatus, and equipment in residential structures. This license is limited to residential work and does not authorize commercial or industrial electrical installations.
Requirements
- Completion of an approved training program or equivalent experience in residential electrical work
- Must pass the Residential Electrician examination
- Application Fee: $240
Continuing Education
- 16 hours of continuing education required each biennial renewal period
- Minimum 8 hours must cover NEC code updates
- Remaining 8 hours may cover approved industry-related topics
Renewal Process
- Renewal Period: Every 2 years (expires July 15 of even-numbered years)
- Renewal Fee: $200
- Late Renewal Fee: $200 (in addition to the $200 renewal fee)
- Renewal opens 60 days prior to expiration date
Consequences of Operating Without a License
Performing electrical work without a valid license in Montana is a misdemeanor, with a minimum fine of $250 and maximum of $1,000. Offenders may face incarceration from 90 days to one year.
