Montana Journeyman Electrician License — Biennial, $140 to Renew

The Montana State Electrical Board issues the Journeyman Electrician license under Title 37, Chapter 68 of the Montana Code Annotated. Without a valid license, performing electrical installation, alteration, or repair work exposes a worker to a civil cease-and-desist order from DLI under MCA 37-1-109; knowing violation of a subsequent district court injunction is a felony.

Three Experience Paths Qualify You to Sit for the Exam

Applicants must meet one of three experience thresholds before taking the Journeyman Electrician exam:

  • Approved apprenticeship program — completion of a state-registered apprenticeship
  • 8,000 hours of practical electrical work — hands-on installation and repair experience
  • 20,000 hours in electrical maintenance — with at least 8,000 hours of practical hands-on work

The application fee is $190, whether applying by examination or by endorsement/reciprocity.

CE: 32 Hours Per Biennial Cycle — 16 Per Year, 8 NEC Per Year

The biennial renewal requires 32 hours of continuing education total — 16 hours for each year in the renewal cycle (ARM 24.141.2102). At least 8 of those annual hours must cover NEC code updates. New graduates of approved apprenticeship programs are exempt from CE for their first renewal cycle.

Renewal: $140, Expires July 15 of Even-Numbered Years

The $140 renewal is due before July 15 of each even-numbered year. There is no late renewal fee in the current ARM fee schedule (ARM 24.141.405) — a lapsed license requires a new application.
