    Complete the 16 required hours before you start the renewal.

    File through Montana State Electrical Board and pay the $200.00 renewal fee once the supporting proof is ready.

Montana Journeyman Electrician License


The Montana State Electrical Board issues the Journeyman Electrician license, authorizing holders to install, alter, and repair electrical wiring, apparatus, and equipment under the supervision of or independently from a Master Electrician.


What This License Authorizes


Journeyman Electricians may perform electrical installation, alteration, and repair work. They work under the general supervision of a Master Electrician or independently on projects, depending on the scope of work.


Requirements


  • Completion of an approved apprenticeship program (typically 4 years / 8,000 hours)
  • Must pass the Journeyman Electrician examination
  • Application Fee: $190 (by examination), $250 (by endorsement/reciprocity)

Continuing Education


  • 16 hours of continuing education required each biennial renewal period
  • Minimum 8 hours must cover NEC code updates
  • Remaining 8 hours may cover approved industry-related topics
  • Newly licensed apprenticeship graduates are exempt from CE for their first renewal

Renewal Process


  • Renewal Period: Every 2 years (expires July 15 of even-numbered years)
  • Renewal Fee: $200
  • Late Renewal Fee: $200 (in addition to the $200 renewal fee)
  • Renewal opens 60 days prior to expiration date

Consequences of Operating Without a License


Performing electrical work without a valid license in Montana is a misdemeanor, with a minimum fine of $250 and maximum of $1,000. Offenders may face incarceration from 90 days to one year.
