Montana Electrical Contractor License
The Montana State Electrical Board issues the Electrical Contractor license to businesses that perform electrical work in Montana. This is a firm-level license required in addition to the individual electrician licenses held by the firm's employees.
What This License Authorizes
Electrical Contractor licensees may operate a business that performs electrical installation, alteration, and repair work in Montana. The firm must employ at least one licensed Master Electrician who supervises all electrical work.
Requirements
- Must have a licensed Master Electrician associated with the firm
- Proof of general liability insurance
- Workers' compensation coverage if the firm has employees
- Montana Contractor Registration
- Application Fee: $300 (limited or unlimited electrical contractor)
Renewal Process
- Renewal Period: Every 2 years (expires July 15 of even-numbered years)
- Renewal Fee: $300
- Late Renewal Fee: $300 (in addition to the $300 renewal fee)
- Must maintain current insurance and contractor registration throughout the license term
Consequences of Operating Without a License
Operating an electrical contracting business without a valid license in Montana is a misdemeanor, with a minimum fine of $250 and maximum of $1,000. Offenders may face incarceration from 90 days to one year.
