Montana Master Electrician License
The Montana State Electrical Board, under the Department of Labor & Industry, issues the Master Electrician license. This license authorizes the holder to plan, lay out, and supervise the installation, alteration, and repair of electrical wiring, apparatus, and equipment.
What This License Authorizes
Master Electricians may supervise journeyman electricians and apprentices, plan and design electrical installations, and take responsibility for ensuring all electrical work meets the National Electrical Code (NEC) and Montana electrical regulations.
Requirements
- Must hold a valid Journeyman Electrician license
- Additional experience as a journeyman electrician required
- Must pass the Master Electrician examination
- Application Fee: $190
Continuing Education
- 16 hours of continuing education required each biennial renewal period
- Minimum 8 hours must cover NEC code updates
- Remaining 8 hours may cover approved industry-related topics
Renewal Process
- Renewal Period: Every 2 years (expires July 15 of even-numbered years)
- Renewal Fee: $200
- Late Renewal Fee: $200 (in addition to the $200 renewal fee)
- Renewal opens 60 days prior to expiration date
Consequences of Operating Without a License
Performing electrical work without a valid license in Montana is a misdemeanor, with a minimum fine of $250 and maximum of $1,000. Offenders may also face incarceration ranging from 90 days to one year.
