Montana Journeyman Plumber License
The Montana Board of Plumbers issues the Journeyman Plumber license, authorizing holders to install, alter, and repair plumbing systems in residential and commercial buildings throughout Montana.
What This License Authorizes
Journeyman Plumbers may perform plumbing installation, alteration, and repair work under the supervision of a Master Plumber or independently, depending on the scope of work and local requirements.
Requirements
- Completion of an approved apprenticeship program (typically 4 years)
- Must pass the Journeyman Plumber examination
- Application Fee: $100 application fee + $170 license fee ($270 total)
Continuing Education
- 4 hours of Board-approved continuing education required annually
- Must be code-related content
- Retain completion certificates for a minimum of 3 years
- Newly licensed plumbers are exempt from CE for their first renewal
Renewal Process
- Renewal Period: Annual (expires September 1)
- Renewal Fee: $270
- Late Renewal Fee: $540 (double the renewal fee, postmarked after September 1)
- Late Grace Period: 45 days after September 1
- After the 45-day grace period, the license expires and the licensee must reapply
Consequences of Operating Without a License
Performing plumbing work without a valid license in Montana is a misdemeanor, with a minimum fine of $250 and maximum of $1,000. Offenders may face incarceration from 90 days to one year.
