Montana Fire Protection Individual Endorsement
The Montana Fire Protection License Program issues the Individual Endorsement to technicians who sell, install, or service fire protection systems and equipment. This is an individual license required in addition to the Business Entity license held by the employing firm.
Qualification Pathways
Applicants must meet one of the following qualification pathways:
- NICET Certification — Current NICET certification (applicable work elements or NICET Level II or higher)
- State-Approved Apprenticeship — Completion of a state-approved apprenticeship program
- Manufacturer Training — Completion of manufacturer-recognized training program
- Reciprocity — Equivalent endorsement from another jurisdiction recognized by the Board
Application and Fees
- Application Fee: $100 (non-refundable)
Continuing Education
- 4 hours of approved continuing education required annually
- CE must be submitted to the Board during audits; retain completion certificates
- CE requirement does not apply until the first full year of endorsement
Renewal Process
- Renewal Period: Annual (renew by May 31)
- Renewal Fee: Contact the Montana Fire Protection License Program for the current renewal fee at (406) 444-5696 or DLIBSDHELP@MT.GOV
- Late Renewal Fee: $100 additional penalty for renewals after May 31
- Renew online through EBIZ.MT.GOV/POL or the DLI licensing portal
Note: An additional $5 surcharge per HB 227 (2025 Montana Legislative Session, effective July 1, 2025) may apply to qualifying fire protection license types. Contact MT DLI to confirm current total fees.
Consequences of Operating Without a License
Performing fire protection work without a valid individual endorsement is a violation subject to license denial, suspension, revocation, and penalties under Montana law.
