Montana Fire Protection Business Entity License
The Montana Fire Protection License Program, under the Department of Labor & Industry, issues the Business Entity license to companies that sell, install, or service fire protection systems and equipment in Montana.
What This License Covers
The Business Entity license is required for companies engaged in:
- Fire Extinguisher Servicing — Servicing, recharging, and maintaining portable fire extinguishers
- Fire Alarm Systems — Selling, servicing, or installing fire detection and alarm systems
- Special Agent Fire Suppression Systems — Installing and servicing fire suppression systems and fire extinguisher systems
Insurance Requirements
- Fire Extinguisher Servicing: Commercial general liability insurance with a minimum limit of $500,000 per occurrence (premises/operations and products/completed operations coverage required)
- Fire Alarm / Suppression Systems: Commercial general liability insurance with a minimum limit of $1,000,000 per occurrence (same coverage types required)
- Workers' compensation insurance required unless the business is a sole proprietorship or partnership where all members hold Independent Contractor Exemption Certificates
Application and Fees
- Application Fee: $200 (non-refundable)
- Failure to maintain required liability insurance constitutes grounds for denial, suspension, or revocation of the license
Renewal Process
- Renewal Period: Annual (renew by May 31)
- Renewal Fee: $200
- Late Renewal Fee: $200 additional penalty
- Renew online through EBIZ.MT.GOV/POL or the DLI licensing portal
Note: An additional $5 surcharge per HB 227 (2025 Montana Legislative Session, effective July 1, 2025) may apply to qualifying fire protection license types. Contact MT DLI at (406) 444-5696 or DLIBSDHELP@MT.GOV to confirm current total fees.
Consequences of Operating Without a License
Operating a fire protection business without a valid license is a violation subject to license denial, suspension, revocation, and additional penalties under Montana law.
