Montana Elevator Mechanic License
The Montana Department of Labor & Industry's Elevator Contractors, Mechanics, and Inspectors Licensing Program issues the Elevator Mechanic license. This individual license is required for mechanics who install, alter, repair, or maintain elevators and other conveyance equipment.
What This License Authorizes
Elevator Mechanics may install, alter, repair, and maintain elevators, escalators, dumbwaiters, moving walks, and other conveyance equipment. They must work under a licensed Elevator Contractor.
Requirements
- Completion of an approved apprenticeship or equivalent experience
- Must pass the Elevator Mechanic examination
- Application Fee: $200 (non-refundable)
Continuing Education
- 8 hours of continuing education required per license term (annual)
Renewal Process
- Renewal Period: Annual (expires April 1)
- Annual Renewal Fee: $150
- Must complete continuing education requirements
- Renew online through the DLI licensing portal
Consequences of Operating Without a License
Performing elevator mechanic work without a valid license is a violation subject to penalties under Montana law.
