Montana Elevator Contractor License — Required for Any Conveyance Work

Any Montana business that installs, alters, repairs, or maintains elevators, escalators, dumbwaiters, or moving walks statewide must hold a current license from the Department of Labor & Industry. Operating without one violates Title 37, Chapter 73 and Title 50, Chapter 60 of the Montana Code Annotated.

Application: $600 Plus Three Required Proofs

The application fee is $600. Submit through the DLI licensing portal with three items:

  • General liability insurance — proof required under MCA § 50-60-716
  • Montana contractor registration — must be current at time of application
  • Certificate of Existence or Certificate of Fact — issued by the Montana Secretary of State

Renewal: $600, Expires Every April 1

The license renews annually, expiring April 1. The renewal fee is $600. Insurance, contractor registration, and Secretary of State filings must all remain valid through each renewal cycle — lapses in any of them block the renewal.
