Montana Boiler Operator License
The Montana Boiler Operator Program, under the Department of Labor & Industry, issues operator licenses for individuals who operate boilers and pressure vessels in Montana. Examination is required for all license classifications.
License Classifications
Montana issues seven boiler engineer classifications:
1. Low Pressure — Steam boilers ≤15 psi; hot water ≤50 psi/250°F
2. Limited Low Pressure — Hot water heating ≤30 psi/210°F; hot water supply ≤160 psi/210°F
3. Third Class — Steam ≤150 psi; water ≤160 psi/350°F; boilers ≤150 hp
4. Second Class — Steam ≤250 psi; water ≤375 psi/450°F; steam machinery ≤100 hp
5. First Class — All classes, pressures, and temperatures of steam and water boilers
6. Agricultural — Seasonal steam boilers ≤150 psi for agricultural processing
7. Traction — Traction engines or boilers mounted on wheels
Requirements
- Must pass the written examination for the desired classification (administered at local Job Services)
- Pre-approval from the Program required before scheduling examination
- Application Fee: $70 (uniform across all classifications)
Renewal Process
- Renewal Period: Annual (renews February 1 through April 1)
- Renewal Fee: $35
- No continuing education required
- Renew online through the DLI licensing portal
Consequences of Operating Without a License
Operating a boiler without a valid operator license is a violation of Montana law subject to penalties including shutdown orders and civil penalties.
