Detailed notes
The fine print is here.
Massachusetts Master Gas Fitter License
The Massachusetts Board of State Examiners of Plumbers and Gas Fitters issues the Master Gas Fitter license under M.G.L. c.142. The Master Gas Fitter license is separate from the Master Plumber license and is required to contract for gas piping installation and repair work in Massachusetts.
What This License Authorizes
Licensed Master Gas Fitters may install, maintain, and repair gas piping systems in residential and commercial buildings throughout Massachusetts. Master Gas Fitters may pull gas permits and supervise Journeyman Gas Fitters working under their license.
Requirements
- Examination: Must pass the Massachusetts Master Gas Fitter exam administered by the Board.
- Experience: Journeyman Gas Fitter experience required before applying for the Master level.
- Insurance: General liability insurance with completed operations coverage required for permit applicants (M.G.L. c.142 §21A); a bond is accepted in lieu of insurance.
Continuing Education
M.G.L. c.142 §6A requires continuing education for gas fitters as determined by the Board. The specific CE hour count is established in 248 CMR board regulations. Contact the Board for the current CE requirement.
Fees
Application and renewal fees are set annually by the Massachusetts Commissioner of Administration under M.G.L. c.7 §3B. Current fees are not published in the statute. Contact the Board or visit mass.gov for the current fee schedule.
Renewal
- Renewal Period: Every 2 years (biennial; renew on or before May 1)
- Local Registration: Master Gas Fitters must also register with local boards of health or building inspectors in the towns where they work (M.G.L. c.142 §6, fee capped at $20/town).
Relationship to Master Plumber
Massachusetts issues Master Gas Fitter and Master Plumber as separate licenses administered by the same Board. Contractors performing both plumbing and gas work must hold both credentials.
Penalties
Performing gas fitting work without a valid license is a violation under M.G.L. c.142, subject to fines and potential criminal prosecution.
