Massachusetts Fire Protection Contractor License


The Massachusetts Bureau of Pipefitters, Refrigeration Technicians, and Sprinkler Fitters (DPS) licenses fire protection contractors who install, inspect, and maintain fire sprinkler and fire protection systems. A valid license is required under Massachusetts regulations.


Requirements


  • Examination: Must pass the MA fire protection contractor exam
  • NICET Certification: NICET certification required for applicable systems
  • Insurance: General liability and workers' compensation insurance required
  • Application Fee: $100

Renewal Information


  • Renewal Period: Every 2 years (biennial)
  • Renewal Fee: $75
  • Grace Period: 30 days after expiration

Scope of Work


Licensed fire protection contractors may design, install, inspect, test, and maintain fire sprinkler systems and related fire protection equipment throughout Massachusetts.

Installing or maintaining fire protection systems without a valid license is subject to fines, stop-work orders, and enforcement action.
