Massachusetts Construction Supervisor License
The Massachusetts Board of Building Regulations and Standards (BBRS) issues Construction Supervisor Licenses (CSL). Massachusetts requires a licensed construction supervisor on every building project, making this one of the most important licenses for contractors in the state.
Requirements
- Examination: Must pass the Massachusetts CSL exam (unrestricted or restricted)
- Experience: Minimum 3 years of documented construction experience
- Insurance: General liability and workers' compensation insurance required
- Continuing Education: 12 hours per renewal cycle
- Application Fee: $150
Renewal Information
- Renewal Period: Every 2 years
- Renewal Fee: $100
- Continuing Education: 12 hours required (must include code updates)
- Late Penalty: $100 additional fee
- Grace Period: 30 days after expiration
Scope of Work
Construction supervisors oversee all building construction, alteration, and demolition projects. An unrestricted CSL allows supervision of all types of construction, while restricted licenses limit the scope to specific project types.
Penalties for Non-Compliance
Supervising construction without a valid CSL is a violation of the State Building Code. Penalties include fines up to $1,000 per offense and potential criminal prosecution.
