Massachusetts Journeyman Electrician License (Class B)

The Massachusetts Board of State Examiners of Electricians issues the Class B Journeyman Electrician certificate under M.G.L. c.141. A Journeyman Electrician may perform electrical work under the direct supervision of a licensed Master Electrician (Class A) but may not independently contract for electrical work or pull permits.

What This License Authorizes

Class B Journeyman Electricians may install, maintain, and repair electrical wiring, equipment, and systems when working under the supervision of a Class A Master Electrician. Journeymen may not act as contractors or independently pull electrical permits.

Requirements

  • Examination: Must pass the Massachusetts journeyman electrician exam administered by the Board of State Examiners of Electricians.
  • Experience: Documented apprenticeship or on-the-job experience as required by the Board.
  • Insurance: General liability insurance is required of permit applicants (Class A Masters who pull permits); Class B Journeymen working as employees under a licensed master typically are not required to maintain their own contractor liability insurance. Verify current requirements with the Board.

Fees

Application and renewal fees are set annually by the Massachusetts Commissioner of Administration under M.G.L. c.7 §3B and are not published in the statute itself. Contact the Board of State Examiners of Electricians directly or visit mass.gov for the current fee schedule.

Renewal

  • Renewal Period: Every 3 years (certificates expire July 31 of the third year)
  • Continuing Education: CE requirements for Class B Journeymen should be confirmed directly with the Board; the statute (M.G.L. c.141) does not mandate CE by its text, but board regulations (237 CMR) may establish requirements.

Advancement

To advance to a Class A Master Electrician certificate, a Class B Journeyman must hold the Class B certificate for at least 12 months before applying (M.G.L. c.141 §3).

Penalties

Performing electrical work without a valid license is a criminal offense under M.G.L. c.141. First offense: fines up to $500. Subsequent offenses: fines up to $1,000 and/or imprisonment.
