Massachusetts Hoisting Engineer License


The Massachusetts Department of Public Safety (DPS) licenses hoisting engineers who operate cranes, hoists, and other lifting equipment on construction sites. Massachusetts is one of the strictest states for hoisting engineer requirements.


Requirements


  • Examination: Must pass the Massachusetts hoisting engineer exam
  • Experience: Documented equipment operation experience required
  • Continuing Education: 2 hours per renewal cycle (per 230 CMR 6.00)
  • Application Fee: $75

License Types


  • 1A: All types of hoisting equipment
  • 1B: Hoisting equipment up to 8-ton capacity
  • 1C: Hoisting equipment up to 5-ton capacity
  • 2A/2B: Tower cranes
  • 3A/3B: Pile driving
  • 4 series: Various specialty equipment

Renewal Information


  • Renewal Period: Every 2 years
  • Renewal Fee: $60
  • Continuing Education: 2 hours required each cycle
  • Grace Period: 30 days after expiration

Penalties for Non-Compliance


Operating hoisting equipment without a valid license is subject to fines up to $1,000 per offense and potential criminal prosecution.
