Maine Propane and Natural Gas Technician License

The Maine Fuel Board requires a Propane and Natural Gas Technician license before you can install, service, connect, or deliver propane or natural gas equipment in Maine. Operating without this license is a violation of Title 32, Chapter 139.

Your License Covers Specific Authority Categories — Not All Gas Work

This is a category-based credential, not a general gas authorization. The Maine Fuel Board issues the license for one or more of five authority categories:

  • Delivery Technician — propane delivery operations
  • Plant Operator — propane plant operations
  • Tank Setter and Outside Piping — tank installation and exterior gas piping
  • Appliance Connection and Service — connecting and servicing gas appliances
  • Large Equipment Connection and Service — commercial-scale gas equipment

You may only perform work within your licensed categories.

Qualifying Requires Both an Exam and Approved Training

Two requirements must be satisfied before you apply to the Maine Fuel Board:

1. Pass a Maine Fuel Board examination

2. Complete one of: a certified employee training program of a national propane gas association, or a board-approved propane or natural gas course at a Maine community college or career and technical education center

Required at application:

  • Exam results and training certificate
  • Criminal background check ($21)
  • Application fee: $121 ($100 license fee + $21 background check)
