Detailed notes
The fine print is here.
Maine Helper Electrician License
A Helper Electrician license from the Maine Electricians' Examining Board lets you work on electrical installations, but only under the direct supervision of a licensed Master, Journeyman, or Limited Electrician. Skip the license and you're in violation of Title 32, Chapter 17, which authorizes criminal charges in addition to fines.
What "Direct Supervision" Actually Means
Helpers work in the employment of a master electrician, limited electrician, or electrical company under the direct supervision of a licensed electrician. The supervising electrician is responsible for oversight of all helper work — you may not perform electrical work independently at any point.
Application: No Exam, Just a Background Check
There is no examination requirement for the Helper license. Apply through the Maine Electricians' Examining Board via the Office of Professional and Occupational Regulation. The application fee is $46 — a $25 license fee plus a $21 background check.
Renew Every Two Years for $25
Helper licenses are valid for two years from the date of issuance. Renew through the Board's online services for $25. Renewal within 90 days after expiration carries a $50 late fee. Miss the 90-day window and you must reapply as a new applicant. No continuing education is required at the Helper level.
Working Toward Journeyman
The Helper license is the entry point for an electrical career in Maine. Hours worked under a licensed Master Electrician count toward the experience requirement for the Journeyman Electrician exam. Review current experience requirements at the Maine Electricians' Examining Board application page before applying.
