Before you renew

Get the filing straight.

    Finish the CE first

    Complete the 15 required hours before you start the renewal.

    File with the board

    File through Maine Electricians' Examining Board and pay the $150.00 renewal fee once the supporting proof is ready.

    Leave room for processing

    Typical processing time is 30 days, so do not wait until the last minute.

If you miss the deadline, the late penalty is $50.00, with a 90-day grace period.

Maine Limited Electrician License


The Maine Electricians' Examining Board issues Limited Electrician licenses for individuals who perform electrical work within a specific category of electrically operated equipment or installations.


What This License Authorizes


Limited Electricians are authorized to install and service electrical work only within their specific licensed category. Categories include:


  • Low Energy — alarm systems, telecommunications, data wiring
  • Gas Dispense — fuel dispensing equipment
  • House Wiring — residential electrical installations
  • Outdoor Signs — sign wiring (excludes branch circuit wiring)
  • Refrigeration — refrigeration and air conditioning equipment
  • Traffic Signals — traffic signal systems
  • Water Pumps — water pump electrical connections
  • Crane Technicians — crane electrical systems

Requirements


  • Pass the Limited Electrician examination for your specific category
  • Meet experience requirements for your category
  • Complete a criminal background check ($21 fee)
  • Application Fee: $171 (includes $150 license fee + $21 background check)

Continuing Education


Limited Electricians must complete 15 hours of continuing education on the current National Electrical Code (NEC) as adopted by the board.


Renewal Process


  • Renewal Period: Every 2 years from date of issuance
  • Renewal Fee: $150
  • Late Fee: $50 for renewals up to 90 days after expiration
  • Applicants renewing more than 90 days late may be subject to all requirements governing new applicants

Insurance


Insurance is not required by the Board for individual licensure, but is recommended.
