Before you renew

Get the filing straight.

    Finish the CE first

    Complete the 15 required hours before you start the renewal.

    File with the board

    File through Maine Electricians' Examining Board and pay the $150.00 renewal fee once the supporting proof is ready.

    Leave room for processing

    Typical processing time is 30 days, so do not wait until the last minute.

If you miss the deadline, the late penalty is $50.00, with a 90-day grace period.

Maine Master Electrician License


The Maine Electricians' Examining Board, under the Office of Professional and Occupational Regulation, issues Master Electrician licenses. A Master Electrician is authorized to plan, layout, and supervise the installation of electrical wiring, apparatus, and equipment for all types of electrical installations.


What This License Authorizes


Master Electricians may perform and supervise all types of electrical installations, including residential, commercial, and industrial. They may also supervise licensed journeyman, limited, helper, and journeyman-in-training electricians.


Requirements


  • Pass the Master Electrician examination
  • Hold a valid Journeyman Electrician license with documented experience
  • Complete a criminal background check ($21 fee)
  • Application Fee: $171 (includes $150 license fee + $21 background check)

Continuing Education


Master Electricians must complete 15 hours of continuing education on the current National Electrical Code (NEC) as adopted by the board. The NEC is updated on a 3-year cycle.


Renewal Process


  • Renewal Period: Every 2 years from date of issuance
  • Renewal Fee: $150
  • Late Fee: $50 for renewals up to 90 days after expiration
  • Applicants renewing more than 90 days late may be subject to all requirements governing new applicants

Insurance


Insurance is not required by the Board for individual licensure, but is recommended.
