Maine Journeyman Oil Burner / Solid Fuel Technician License
The Maine Fuel Board's Journeyman license authorizes you to install, repair, and service oil burner and solid fuel heating equipment under the indirect supervision of a licensed Master technician. Working without it violates Title 32, Chapter 139 — penalties include fines and criminal charges.
What the License Covers
Journeyman technicians perform hands-on service and installation of oil burners, solid fuel appliances, and related heating equipment. Under Title 32, §18133, Journeyman technicians work under the indirect supervision of, or in the employ of, a licensed Master Oil Burner Technician.
Application: Exam and Apprenticeship Required
Apply through the Maine Fuel Board at the Office of Professional and Occupational Regulation. The application fee is $121 — $100 for the license plus a $21 background check. Qualifying requires a passing score on the Journeyman Oil Burner / Solid Fuel examination plus documented apprenticeship experience meeting the board's requirements.
Renew Every Two Years for $100
Journeyman licenses renew on a two-year cycle for $100. Renew within 90 days of expiration and you owe a $50 late fee. Beyond 90 days, reinstatement runs $100 (license) plus $100 (penalty). No continuing education is required at the Journeyman level.
Path to Master Technician
Advancing to Master Oil Burner / Solid Fuel Technician requires a total of at least 4 years of licensed experience, with at least 2 of those years as a licensed Journeyman. The Master license authorizes independent supervision and business operation.
