Louisiana Fire Protection Contractor License

Annual Renewal at $100 — 8 CE Hours Required Each Year

The Louisiana State Fire Marshal (OSFM) licenses individuals who install, inspect, and maintain fire sprinkler, fire alarm, and fixed suppression systems statewide. Individual employee licenses cost $100 to apply and $100 to renew annually. Each licensed employee must complete 8 continuing education hours per year, with at least 50% drawn from OSFM's approved categories covering NFPA standards, fire code updates, and system technology.

NICET Certification Determines Which Systems You Can Qualify For

To qualify a firm for fire sprinkler installation work, the qualifying employee must hold NICET Level 3 certification or a professional engineer license. Fire alarm qualification requires NICET at the appropriate level. Your OSFM application must include a current NICET certificate, a training transcript with passing exam score, and a general liability insurance certificate showing at least $500,000 in coverage — with "Life Safety & Property Protection" noted in the operations description. Workers' compensation coverage is also required, with an exception if you are the sole owner-employee.

No Late Fee for 30 Days — Then $25, Then $50, Then Suspension

Louisiana fire protection licenses expire annually. Renewing within 30 days of your expiration date carries no penalty. After that, the late fee is $25 from day 31 through day 45 and $50 from day 46 through day 60. Past 60 days, the license suspends and reinstatement requires paying full initial fees.

Unlicensed Work Is a Misdemeanor With Fines Up to $5,000 Per Violation

Operating without a valid OSFM license exposes a contractor to fines of up to $5,000 per violation and misdemeanor criminal charges. If unlicensed work causes property damage exceeding $500, penalties escalate to up to six months in jail and fines between $500 and $5,000 per day. Apply and renew at lasfm.org/licensing; processing takes approximately 30 days.
